Ecological Design

The task of the designer in an ecological construction project is to integrate the needs and desires of the client with the opportunities and constraints of the environment. A good design begins by shaping the structure to not only house the aesthetic and programmatic elements specified by the client but also to engage its environment, allowing the home or building to utilize the natural resources available while preserving the ecological integrity of the site. Taking full advantage of solar exposures, air movements, trees, water, slopes and views allows for the creation of spaces that require less energy to heat, cool and light as well as being pleasing to the eye and a joy to inhabit.

Integrating appropriate technology into the building envelope is the next important step toward reducing the negative impacts of excessive energy use on the larger environment. The pairing of a fundamentally sound relationship with the landscape and efficient technologies ensures a home that will stand the test of time, providing our next generation with an asset rather than a liability.
