First Straw Bale House Permitted in Eugene

Still ahead of its time when proposed, this home was finally approved by the city’s building department in 1996. It is essentially a timber frame house with straw bale infill. Part of an intentional community, the straw and stucco were done by a largely volunteer workforce. Additional features include: solar hot water, radiant floor heat, heat recovery ventilation, recycled materials, colored concrete finished floor, and handmade tiles and metalwork by the home designer.

Designer: Shea Bajaj // Completed: 1997
